A lot of clients of the digital agency I run, Incognito Worldwide, forward emails they receive and ask me what to do. Or they send an email explaining an email they received in panic.
There is a simple rule -- go to the source.
I get emails all the time telling that some account of mine is going to be deleted if I don't update it right away.
Ding dong, legit platforms give you plenty of notice if there is an issue with your account and, moreover, usually give you a grace period even if you do miss updating an account.The easiest way to ensure that these urgent emails are legit is to simply NOT click on the email link, but instead go to the main platform URL and login.
Many scammers, spammers, and hackers will disguise their emails to look legitimate. For example, say you bank of Bank Of America, they may send something that has bank of america in the email address, but that they modify, like customerservice@bankofamerica.web.com.
If any site you have an account with says UPDATE RIGHT WAY, be suspicious. Go to the main URL of that site and login, and if there is an issue you'll have a message in your notifications there.
WHAT'S THE HARM?
A lot of people assume there is no harm checking out the link. There wrong, by clicking that link you allow hackers to access your computer and drop code into it, thereby gaining access to all your accounts and passwords.
